15 Killed in Georgia Car Wrecks Over Memorial Day Weekend
Heavy holiday traffic means riskier conditions for Georgia drivers. This past Memorial Day weekend was no exception. Despite police efforts to keep motorists safe, 15 people were killed in traffic accidents across the state.
Local police and sheriff’s departments investigated 9 of the fatalities while the Georgia State Patrol investigated 332 wrecks that results in 196 injuries and 6 fatalities, GSP spokesman Gordy Wright told the AJC on Tuesday. Four of the 15 fatalities occurred in Metro Atlanta –three in Cobb and one in Gwinnett.
Although Wright said that state troopers arrested 282 people for driving under the influence during the holiday period, alcohol does not appear to have been a contributing factor in any of the fatal crashes investigated.
