Geoff Pope Joins Birth Trauma Litigation Group
On April 28th, founding partner Geoff Pope joined the county’s leading birth trauma litigators at the American Association of Justice’s Birth Trauma Litigation Group. The round table discussion, which took place in Chicago, Illinois, focused on birth trauma legal cases in light of the new legislative limits on malpractice personal injury cases.
Pope was invited to speak by the American Association of Justice because of his extensive experience with medical malpractice cases. Pope, with partner Marc Howard, has achieved numerous million-dollar recoveries and, more importantly, has secured patient safety measures at major healthcare facilities.
What is Birth Trauma?
An injury is considered a birth trauma if it occur immediately before, during or after the birth of a child. These include a wide range of injuries and permanent disabilities including:
- Cerebral palsy
- Erb’s palsy
- Brachial plexus palsy
- Brain damage
- Visual and audio impairments
- Speech impediments
- Learning disabilities
- And even death.
Birth traumas most often occur when a physician fails quickly and appropriately respond to the conditions of the birth. Common causes of injury include failure to recognize pregnancy disorders, improper use of medical devices such as forceps, or failure to perform a necessary caesarian section.
