Fatal Tractor-Trailer Accident Shuts Down I-75 North of Atlanta
Early Wednesday morning, a deadly truck wreck shut down I-75 in both directions north of Atlanta, the AJC reports. Three people died in the fiery crash, which occurred in northern Bartow County, between Cartersville and Adairsville.
Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright explained that a northbound tractor-trailer left the roadway on the left side, striking a guardrail and a concrete pillar supporting an overhead sign. The truck burst into flames. The sign, which fell onto the southbound lanes, was then struck by a southbound tractor-trailer, causing it to run off the road. The driver and a passenger in the first truck along with the driver of the second truck were killed.
Northbound traffic was forced to exit the interstate at Exit 293, while southbound traffic was diverted at Exit 306. The northbound lanes reopened around 5:30 a.m. and a single southbound lane opened about an hour later. As of 7 a.m., two other southbound lanes remain closed.
