Six Killed Over New Year’s Weekend
New Year’s celebrations are often met with tragedy as more drivers are on the road. This year, six people were killed in wrecks throughout Georgia over the 102-hour holiday period, according to the AJC. Yet this total is less than half the number of people killed over a shorter holiday weekend last year. In late 2011/early 2012, 13 people died over the 78-hour holiday travel period.
The fatal wrecks this year were investigated by police in Cobb, Macon, and Perry County, and by State Patrol posts in Athens, Madison and Valdosta. There was a total of 585 wrecks with 266 injuries during this year’s counting period which began at 6 p.m. on Friday and ended on Tuesday at midnight.
Troopers also arrested 321 motorists for driving under the influence, which is up from the 262 arrests made last year.
