Georgia Ranks 40th for Senior Care
For the second year in a row, Georgia was one of the bottom 10 states for senior healthcare according to America’s Health Rankings. The extensive study compares 34 different measures across senior care facilities to determine areas needing improvement. Health data from across the state revealed many problem areas affecting our seniors and earned Georgia the 40thposition on the list.
While the quality of nursing home care rose nationally over the past year, many Georgia seniors still suffer from low quality nursing homes. At Pope & Howard, P.C. we know that families want to choose care facilities where their loved ones will be safe. Unfortunately, the report found a lower than normal number of beds available in quality Georgia nursing homes.
With fewer quality nursing home beds available, Georgia seniors are more likely to live in less capable facilities and experience nursing home abuse or nursing home negligence.
Another issue affecting Georgia seniors involves home healthcare workers. As opposed to most other states, Georgia does not require home healthcare workers to pass a background check. That means violent criminals and sex offenders are able to be hired as aides the vulnerable senior population. While most home healthcare workers provide high quality attention and care, without background checks, Georgia elders are more likely to experience caretaker abuse.
Our nursing home abuse lawyers at Pope & Howard, P.C. know that finding a quality nursing home for an older loved one can be a challenge. Make sure to ask questions your senior care facility these important questions before you make a final choice:
- Does the nursing home require employee background checks?
- Is the facility certified and accredited?
- Have there been any incidents of nursing home abuse or negligence in the past 10 years?
Avoiding the problems present in Georgia senior healthcare can be difficult, but with additional screening and research it’s possible to find the best facility for your elderly loved one.
