Mental Retardation

Mental retardation is a condition that includes below-average intellectual function and a lack of skills necessary for daily living. If a child’s motor, language, and self-help skills are not developing or are developing at a slower rate than the child’s peers, this may be a sign of mental retardation. The degree of impairment can vary widely, and in mild cases, may not be apparent until school age or later.

In many cases, mental retardation is the result of genetic abnormalities such as Fragile X or Down’s Syndrome. However, mental retardation is often the result of a birth injury or trauma. Preventable birth injuries that can result in mental retardation include:

  • Insufficient oxygen to the brain during labor or delivery
  • Trauma from excessive force during delivery
  • Infections like Encephalitis, Listeriosis, and Meningitis
